Steve
Hanks was born in San Diego (California, USA) in 1949. From early childhood he
spent a lot of time on the ocean coast. When the boy was walking to school, the
family moved to new Mexico. After school Steve entered the Art Academy in San
Francisco, which he graduated with honors. In 1976 he began working as a
designer in Campfire Girl's camp (new Mexico). For several years Hanks
experimenting with different techniques: paints in oils and watercolor, drawing
in pencil, works with acrylic paints. Gradually, he develops his own style,
which the artist calls "emotional realism". Most often he writes of
people, and it's not just portraits, but it is difficult constructed
compositions, in which parts play a big role. Hanks is constantly in the top
ten American painters (by surveys U.S. Art Magazine). Many critics acknowledge
Steve Hanks one of the best contemporary watercolorists.
"Art
comes from a deep inner sense of direction. It begins with a reconsideration of
one's own life, to find the source of her impulses and attempts to unravel its
secrets. I consider myself to be emotional realist. Emotions are what I want to
portray. Realism is just my way to do it."- Steve Hanks
